If you are new to genealogical research, of you if you need to brush up on some concepts, this is a great place to start.

The Church maintains a great resource center for starting out. But before you link out, allow us to walk you through a few steps on family and geneaological research.

Your goal when starting out is to:

  1. Identify yourself
  2. Identify your parents
  3. Identify your grandparents
  4. Identify your great grandparents.

This is called the 4-generation family sheet. From here, you can begin to expand out by taking one line and tracing it back.

Allow us to illustrate by walking through these basic steps as compiled by "How Do I Start My Family History" booklet:

Step 1: Identify what you know about your family.
Step 2: Decide what you want to learn about your family.
Step 3: Select records to search.
Step 4: Obtain and search the record.
Step 5: Use the information.
