Decide What You Want to Learn
  1. Select an ancestor from the pedigree chart (step 1). If possible, select an ancestor who was born before 1900.

  2. Identify questions you want to answer about your ancestor, such as,
    "When and where did he or she die?"

  3. Select one question as the objective. In general, find out about the death before the marriage and the marriage before the death.

  4. On the Research Log illustrated below, write your ancestor's name, the objective (event in question), approximate date of the event, and locality (place of the event).
